Cassie Prater

Author & Professional Story Consultant

Stories have always been what keeps my heart beating. I’m a lifelong binge-reader turned romance author who lives for those gritty, emotional stories that grab you by the throat. *wink* The kind you swear you’ll put down at midnight, but you just need to finish one more chapter. Then you look up at the clock at 2 a.m., wondering how you got here and how you’ll make it through work or life the next day. Oh, to be so immersed! As a professional beta reader and story consultant, I approach stories first as a reader. I react, and I tell you. I question, and I tell you. I get attached, and I tell you. I can tell when a scene works and when it’s close but not quite getting there yet. Depending on what kind of feedback you need, that might mean following along with my reactions as I read, digging deeper into what isn’t landing and why, or helping you work through a story problem while you’re still writing it.Authors come to me when they want honest feedback that isn’t mean or nitpicky. I’ll tell you what’s working and what isn’t without tearing your story apart in the process. My goal is simple. I want your book to be the one readers stay up too late finishing.

Am I Into IT?

$15 flat

Want to know if your book grabs readers right away?
I’ll read your opening chapters and share honest, constructive feedback on:
• How it pulled me in and what emotional impact it had
• Whether the pacing works for your genre
• If the characters pull me in and the premise is clear
A hook check consists of your first 3 chapters (up to 10,000 words).
You’re welcome to include up to 3 big-picture questions with your submission. I’ll address them within your written feedback.

Blurb Review & Rewrite

Blurb Review & Rewrite

Does your blurb make me want to read the book?

$50 flat

Already have a blurb but keep staring at it wondering if it actually works?I’ll read through what you have and give you my honest take on what is and is not quite working for me, and what I think the blurb should sound like based on the book you are trying to promote. That may include:• Strengthening the opening hook
• Making the premise and stakes clearer
• Making sure the genre, tone, and romance come through the way you want them to
• Shortening anything that feels too long or slow
• Cutting wording that feels vague, repetitive, or unnecessary
• Reworking sections that feel weaker
• Rewriting parts of the blurb, or the whole thing if I think a different approach would work better
You’ll get my feedback along with my version of the blurb so you can see exactly what I would do with it.That does not mean my version is the one “right” way to write it. It is just my idea of what I think it should sound like based on the story, tone, and reader experience you are trying to sell. You can use all of it, pieces of it, or none of it if something does not feel like you.

Full Beta Read

Full Beta Read

How did I feel while reading it?

$0.001 per word

Minimum project fee: $20 for manuscripts under 20,000 words

Want to know what it is actually like to read your book?I will read your full manuscript and share honest, constructive feedback focused on the overall reading experience. This service is reaction-based and reader-focused. As I read, I’ll leave margin comments with my thoughts, reactions, questions, and opinions in the places they naturally come up.My feedback addresses:• The emotional impact and how connected I feel to the characters
• Whether the pacing works for your genre
• Where my attention stayed strong or drifted
• How clearly the premise and stakes come through
• Moments where I felt confused, disconnected, surprised, invested, or especially pulled in
At the end, you’ll also receive an overall impression of the manuscript, including what stayed with me, what worked especially well, and where I struggled. This is not a chapter-by-chapter breakdown or revision strategy package. I will tell you what worked for me, what did not, and where I became confused, disconnected, or less invested. The focus stays on my honest reactions as a reader rather than detailed guidance on how to revise the manuscript. You may include up to 5 big-picture questions with your submission. I will address them within your written feedback.

Series Familiarization Read
$0.0005 per word (50% of Full Beta Rate)
Only relevant if your project is part of a series and I am beta reading a later book that requires reading an earlier installment for character, world, and plot continuity. This is a read-only context pass, not a full beta. I do not provide in-text comments or a feedback report for the familiarization book.

Revision-Focused Beta Read

Revision-Focused Beta Read

What's not working, why, and what could make it stronger?

$0.002 per word

Have a manuscript you're getting ready to revise and want another set of eyes on what might need attention?Unlike my Full Beta Read, which focuses on the reader experience through in-margin reactions, questions, and opinions, this service takes a closer look at the story itself and where I believe improvements could be made.Instead of commenting throughout the manuscript as I read, I'll provide a written report focusing on the issues I find. I'll explain what isn't working for me, why I think it's a problem, and what I believe could work better. My feedback focuses on:• Story structure and plot flow
• Character motivation and emotional development
• Pacing, tension, and momentum
• Worldbuilding clarity and consistency
• Differences between what you're trying to accomplish and what's actually coming across on the page
• Suggestions for strengthening areas that need attention
I only provide feedback where I believe it's needed. If a chapter is working well, I'm not going to write something about it just for the sake of having something to say. If the same problem comes up in multiple chapters, I'll address it together rather than repeat the same feedback over and over. You may include up to 5 big-picture questions with your submission. I'll address them as part of my written feedback. This service is intended to help you figure out what needs attention before your next round of revisions. It does not include ongoing in-margin reactions, line editing, or the more extensive analysis provided with a Developmental Edit.

Series Familiarization Read
$0.0005 per word (50% of Full Beta Rate)
Only relevant if your project is part of a series and I am beta reading a later book that requires reading an earlier installment for character, world, and plot continuity. - One consolidated email from you at a time

TWO WEEKS–SIX MONTHS

For authors who want someone they can regularly talk through ideas, possibilities, and story problems with while they write. This service gives you a place to bring the plot ideas, character questions, scene possibilities, twists, relationship decisions, and random “Would this work?” thoughts that come up while writing a book.Maybe you know where the story needs to end but cannot figure out how to get there. Maybe you are choosing between two directions, trying to fix a plot problem, working through a character’s motivation, or wondering whether an idea makes sense with everything you have already established.Throughout the consultation period, you’ll have unlimited email-based access to me for one active story project. You can email me as questions, ideas, and problems come up, and I’ll help you talk through the possibilities, point out issues you may not have considered, and decide which direction makes the most sense for your story.Investment Options

Six-month bookings cover six consecutive months. The consultation ends at the end of your selected period. Developmental Story Consultation

Can you read along as I write and tell me how it’s developing?

MONTHLY ONGOING SERVICE

For authors who want ongoing feedback on new chapters and story material while they are actively writing. This service gives you a place to send me new material as your manuscript develops so I can read along, react to what is happening on the page, and help you see how the story is coming together in real time.Maybe you want to know whether a character choice feels believable, whether the pacing is working, whether a scene landed the way you intended, or whether something you introduced earlier is still holding together as the story grows.Throughout the reading period, you can send me new chapters or sections as you write them. I’ll follow the manuscript as it develops, share my reactions and developmental feedback, point out places where something feels unclear or less effective, and help you identify issues involving character motivation, pacing, emotional impact, continuity, structure, or story direction.Investment Options
Up to 10,000 words per month — $250
Up to 20,000 words per month — $350
Up to 30,000 words per month — $450

• Your selected monthly plan includes up to the listed word count of new material
This service is designed for authors who want someone following the manuscript as it is being written rather than waiting until the story is complete for a traditional beta read.I will tell you what is working for me, where I became confused or disconnected, where something may need more attention, and where I believe the developing story could be stronger. This is not the same as a Revision-Focused Beta Read or Chapter(s) Strategy Consult. I am not providing formal chapter diagnostics, a detailed restructuring plan for every submitted section, or a complete beta-style review of the manuscript. The focus is on following the story as it develops and giving you useful developmental feedback along the way. Each chapter or section is read once. If you revise material based on my feedback, we can discuss the changes, and you may include a short excerpt when needed, but repeated full rereads of revised chapters or sections are not included. This service does not include line editing, proofreading, margin comments throughout the manuscript, repeated rereading of revised material, or unlimited general story consultation unrelated to the material being submitted. If you expect to exceed your selected monthly word count, please contact me before sending additional material so we can determine whether I have availability to accommodate it. Unused words do not roll over into future months.Weekends and federal holidays are not included in response timelines. All reading plans apply to one active story project and cover one month of service. The reading arrangement ends at the end of the selected month or once the included word count has been reached. Cassie was such a great help. I had trouble finding the parts of what needed to be improved with my manuscript and she was able to pinpoint exactly what needed to be done. I also was very happy with the honesty she provided. I am happy to say I would love to book her for another session.

I genuinely don’t know what I would do without Cassie at this point! I'm a dark romantasy author writing very spicy, emotionally intense stories, and Cassie has become such a huge part of my writing process. We work together regularly on outlining, beta reading, story problems, characters, worldbuilding, lore, romances… pretty much everything, and I genuinely have a blast working with her.
She is SO good at identifying weak points in a story—whether that’s an inconsistency, a character motivation that isn’t quite landing, a plot thread that needs more support, or some tiny continuity issue I’ve completely missed. But what makes her especially brilliant to work with is how invested she gets in the stories themselves. She knows my characters, remembers the lore, cares deeply about the romances and the spice, has opinions about everyone, and gets excited right alongside me. It feels like having someone in my corner who genuinely knows and loves the worlds I’m creating while still being able to spot exactly where they could be stronger. She’s an amazing cheerleader. She’ll absolutely tell me when something needs work, but she’s just as enthusiastic about the things that are working, which makes the whole process feel collaborative and exciting rather than intimidating.
At this point, I honestly can’t imagine writing my books without her. She makes my stories stronger, catches the things I can’t see anymore, and somehow makes the entire process more fun at the same time. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This was my second time working with Cassie, and this time I did her Revision Focused beta read and I HIGHLY recommend! She left so many thoughtful, detailed comments throughout, and she didn't shy away from telling me what needed work, what threw off, etc. while also being constructive and helpful. I love working her especially as a first pass through because I know she is friendly and I trust her to be honest without ripping into me haha. Her prices are also very affordable for what she's offering! 10/10, will be working with her again!

I LOVED working with Cassie on my contemporary romance, Madly Deeply Always. She is so much more than a beta reader and was absolutely invaluable to this project.
I really appreciated her honesty when providing feedback. She not only told me what she loved about the story, but also gave me those wonderful real-time reader reactions—with plenty of emojis along the way! We worked in Google Docs, and I was so glad she was happy to accommodate that request. At the same time, she never simply told me what I wanted to hear. She has an excellent eye for detail and is equally willing to identify weak areas, inconsistencies, or plot points that simply aren’t working.I’ve rewritten entire chapters and changed significant plot points because of her feedback—and thank goodness I did! She has also helped me outline a new story from the ground up, and her ability to ask the right questions and spot potential problems early was incredibly valuable.Cassie is both a fantastic critical reader and a wonderfully supportive story partner. My books are genuinely stronger because of her, and I highly recommend her to any author looking to strengthen their story and needing another set of thoughtful, honest eyes to spot what they may be too close to the manuscript to see themselves.

Cassie is incredible. I am so happy I had her read over my manuscript. I had a nagging feeling that there were major problems, but I needed to walk away and let someone else read it. She found the issues and left really great notes. I also enjoyed seeing her reactions to things the characters were dealing with as they happened. It's rewarding as an author to get to experience your story through someone else's eyes, and even better when the suggestions are so on point. I have a lot of work to do to get this story in shape, but I feel like I have a better idea of how to do that now.

This was my first time having someone read my work--gah! Cassie was amazingly supportive, thoughtful and thorough in her comments. I really needed to know how this project "landed" for the reader, and I got exactly that. It has given me a lot of great ideas and ways I can improve my work and helped me with my own confidence. In addition to her actual work, her communication and responsiveness was excellent, finishing well ahead of deadline. You won't be disappointed, and she is well-worth it.

Cassie was so quick and thorough in her hook check. She offered meaningful reactions as well as chapter-by-chapter thoughts to help show where she was the most intrigued by the story. With her comments, I can see where my story might need to begin to capture a reader from page one. I will definitely be back for future projects!

Working with Cassie was an absolute pleasure. Communication was prompt and polite, and she worked with me and my schedule. Turn around was fairly quick and the feedback was detailed and helpful. Not only did she make sure to point out parts that worked, which for me is something I find helpful, encouraging, and necessary so I don't spiral, but the parts there was attention to parts that weren't working as well. There was knowledge behind her comments that made me trust her feedback. I could tell she reads a lot and knows what works for a book. It was definitely the late stage feedback I needed to get this into it's best version before publication. Definitely, 100% will work with again.

I would highly recommend Cassie for anyone needing a professional beta reader! Her feedback was thorough, direct, and to the point while still remaining respectful and kind, which I very much appreciated. She also made me laugh quite a bit with some of her in-line comments. I could tell she was really getting into the story, and that made reading her feedback so much fun. What was especially helpful was how she summarized her thoughts at the end of every chapter, being very clear and direct on what worked, what landed, and what didn't. I would definitely work with her again!

I hate to pay for beta reading services but finding good volunteers is almost impossible. It's worth every penny to pay someone who will provide good feedback within a reasonable amount of time. Cassie did just that.

A huge thank you to Cassie for her incredible work beta reading my dark romance novella, His Forbidden Bargain.
She is a fantastic beta reader and I will definitely use her services again. Her feedback was detailed, thoughtful, and unfailingly honest in the best way, and she gave me the sharp reader reactions and line-level notes on typos and word choice.
Her feedback included constructive, generous suggestions that genuinely strengthened my story.
I highly recommend her if you need a beta reader!

Cassie is an absolutely fantastic beta reader. She did an initial hook check and then a full beta read for my contemporary romance, Madly Deeply Always, and her insight was invaluable at both stages. Her feedback was detailed, honest, and deeply reader-focused, with thoughtful chapter notes that helped sharpen pacing, emotion, and character throughout. She’s the kind of beta who genuinely improves a book, and I’d absolutely recommend her to other authors. If you’re looking for a beta reader who will genuinely elevate your story, book with Cassie now—run, don’t walk. She. Is. Amazing!

Cassie is amazing! Her turnaround was quick, and her hook check was incredibly insightful. She gave clear, focused feedback on what grabbed her, what pulled her in, and where my pacing or emotional flow could tighten without ever sounding negative. Her notes were exactly the kind of critique that actually helps you level up your pages. Definitely worth it.

Very insightful comments. I had concerns about my hook, about the world building and my FMC, and it was great to see that the changes I'd made since early reader comments worked. Would definitely reach out to Cassie again.

Cassie was amazing! It was so fast, and her reactions throughout the manuscript made me giggle or feedback made me nod in agreement with things that needed more work. Overall while I felt there was work that needs to be done to help fix some issues, I left feeling confident and happy with the states of things. Overall a lovely experience.

It was really nice to have an unbiased person read my work that will give honest feedback. I appreciated the comments throughout the writing to get a reader's inner thoughts while reading my story and the longer notes at the end of each chapter to hear an impartial reader's feelings as the story progressed.
